1 Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones,
Give unto the LORD glory and strength.
2 Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name;
Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Why and how can I give You what You already own? Glory…strength–it’s already Yours! I am only mighty when You make me mighty. I can only war when You train my hands for battle.
Yet, here we are again with Your humility, King of all the ages, having everything and yet wanting my voluntary worship. It’s Yours.
3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
The God of glory thunders;
The LORD is over many waters.
I want to hear Your voice; the thundering of Your heart over every tsunami on this earth, whether literal or figurative. How powerful Your voice must be to thunder louder than the crashing of the waves.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;
The voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars,
Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes them also skip like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.
Every defense I try to mount against You fails. Even the strongest cedar tree crumples against the strength of who You are. You make them quiver and shake like a wild animal. More dangerous than the fiercest earthquake is Your anger; more powerful than the darkness of my heart is Your love.
7 The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire.
Every flaming arrow launched against me by the enemy of our souls is destined to fail. Your Spirit quenches them. Though the onslaught may look overwhelming, You divide the coming terror until there’s nothing left. How great Your are, Lord God!
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
The LORD shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth,
And strips the forests bare;
And in His temple everyone says, “Glory!”
Even when I’m found in the desert place, Your voice calls me out into life. Every valley is exalted by Your word, and every mountain abased. You bring the proud low and lift up the humble. This is Your way. This is Your kindness to those who put their trust in You. How can we do anything but honor You?
10 The LORD sat enthroned at the Flood,
And the LORD sits as King forever.
11 The LORD will give strength to His people;
The LORD will bless His people with peace.
You remaind King, established on Your throne, through the greatest disaster our world has ever known. When all but eight people died in the Flood, You were still God and a refuge for Noah and His family. And You will still be God through the coming terror of the Day of the Lord. No matter what we face, You are in Your seat of authority forever; and from this position, You favor us with peace. How great is Your Name!
